Guide to buying Bags and Backpacks

MFA Bag Guide

Okay MFA, I’ve been seeing a lot of bag questions recently, so I’d figure I’d try my hand at one of these guides. This is just a list of suggestions and examples for different types of bags. If you have any other bags/companies to add please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll do my best to add them to the list. Thanks!

Backpacks I’d say the most useful and handy of the bunch, especially if you carry around a lot of things at one time. During school, I carry a laptop most of the time, a textbook or two, a binder and a labcoat.

Here’s a few options:

Herschel Supply Co. Heritage Bag $55

Jansport Right Pack $55

Fjallraven Kanken Backpack $75

LL Bean Sportsman’s Rucksack $119

LL Bean Waxed Cotton Continental Rucksack $139

Frost River Daypack $130-190

Duluth Pack Backpacks and Daypacks $70-165

Mission Workshop Sanction Rucksack $179

Wheelman & Co. Rucksack $208

Filson Rucksack $265

Another suggestion for backpacks is Supreme New York. Every season they come out with a new set of backpacks and duffle bags, they’re always worth a look.

Messenger bags This one is a toughie, and also not one of my favorite types. I myself have one (J.Crew Bowery messenger) and I’m not too fond of it, but it goes better than backpacks when I’m wearing something like a collar shirt, or Peacoat in the winter. This one in particular is going to need a lot of suggestions, I don’t see too many handsome looking messenger bags.

Here’s a few of these:

J.Crew Abingdon Messenger $98

Fossil Decker Messenger $172.99

Saddleback Leather Messenger $382-$422

Briefcases/Carpenter Bags These have been becoming my favorite types, but are also a bit more on the pricier side (depending on the material). I put carpenter bags in this category because it can be a great option instead of a briefcase, which can come off a bit more business than casual. It’s also a bit cheaper in most cases.

Here’s just a few options for these:

Wood and Faulk Carpenter’s Bag $139

WM J Mills and Co. Canvas Briefcase $150

Filson Original Briefcase $225

Frost River Correspondent Briefcase $230

Jack Spade Waxwear Davis Briefcase $375

Saddleback Leather Thin Briefcase $461-$514

Lotuff and Clegg Zip Top Briefcase $680

Duffel/Weekend Bags Going away for a weekend? Avid gym goer? Or just carry around a lot of stuff? You should probably look into getting a duffel/weekend bag. A great thing about these bags overall is that they don’t seem to clash with any type of outfit (i.e: a backpack with a trench coat, etc) Here’s a few quick suggestions:

Herschel Ravine $65

LL Bean Downeaster Sports Canvas Bag in medium $69

Frost River Flight Bag $125-$170

LL Bean Large Zipper Duffel $175

W.M. J Mills and Co Classic Duffel $119-$189

Adidas Striker Duffel $40 (Obviously a lot more sportier than the others I’ve posted, I use this in a navy and black every day for the gym and I’d have to say if you need a bag specifically for the gym, this is a pretty darn good one on the cheap) Other great companies to look into:

Manhattan Portage

Troop London

Wheelman & Co.

Copper River Bag Co.

Check out these sites for their other bags, even if it wasn’t suggested in that category. Most of these companies make all types of bags. Thanks for reading!
